Archaeology, Mexican History
and Culture -
Pre-hispanic culture is found almost everywhere in the State
of Guerrero, much of it still undiscovered to this day where
only the locals know of their existence. According to the studies
of archaeologists who are working in this area,
in "La Chole" or "La Soledad de Maciel", the lost and rediscovered
city of "Cihuacán", located about 15.5 miles south of Zihuatanejo
and belonging to the Municipality of Petatlán, the Pacific Coast
of Mexico once had a more extensive population than it does now.
Their great knowledge of astronomy, acquired through the constant
observation of the astrological constellations during the seasons
of the year, was the basis for their lifestyle, physically
for their agricultural chores, hunting and other activities,
and spiritually for their religious beliefs.
Field Trips and Excursions to the archaeological
site of "La
Chole"
or "La Soledad de Maciel", where a project of unearthing 16 archaeological
sites is underway, among these pyramids built from rounded rocks
and large baked clay bricks, a style which has not been seen
elsewhere in Mexico. A new museum has been built that is due
to open in November 2010.
This is a fascinating new discovery of the
rich cultural life of this region.
